Questions

Is my data uploaded?

No. Every encoding is plain JavaScript that runs in your browser. Text and files stay on your device.

What is the difference between Base32 and Base32 Crockford?

RFC 4648 Base32 uses A to Z and 2 to 7 and pads with =. Crockford Base32 drops the letters I, L, O and U so values are easy to read aloud and type, treats lower and upper case alike, and has no padding.

Why are Base58, Base62 and Base36 limited to 64 KB?

These formats turn the whole input into one very large number, which gets slow for big files. Base32, Base45, Base85 and hex work in small blocks and handle larger files.

Which format is smallest?

Base85 adds about 25 percent to the size, Base62 and Base58 about 35 to 37 percent, Base32 60 percent, and hex 100 percent. Base64, which adds 33 percent, has its own tool.

What does it do with binary data when decoding?

If the decoded bytes are not valid UTF-8 text, the tool offers them as a file download or as hex instead of showing garbled characters.
