How to encode or decode a URL

  1. Choose Encode or Decode, and whether the text is a whole URL or a part of one.
  2. Type or paste the text. The result updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result. For a full URL, its query parameters are listed below for easy reading.

Questions

When do I choose "Part of a URL" or "Whole URL"?

Use "Part of a URL" for a single value, such as a search term or parameter: it encodes characters like &, =, / and ?. Use "Whole URL" for a complete address: it keeps those characters so the link still works.

Why do spaces become %20 or +?

Both mean a space. %20 is the general URL form. + is used in form submissions and many query strings. Turn on "Spaces as +" to match that style.

Why does decoding fail?

Usually because of a lone % sign that is not followed by two hex digits, for example "100% off". Encode that part first, or remove the stray %.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Encoding and decoding use your browser’s built-in functions.
