How to calculate your BMI
- Choose metric (centimetres and kilograms) or imperial (feet, inches, and pounds).
- Type your height and weight. Decimals are fine.
- Read your BMI, its category, and the weight range that counts as healthy for your height.
The categories follow the World Health Organization's adult table and use the same cut-offs for men and women. They apply to adults aged 20 and over. This calculator is for information only and is not medical advice.
Questions
Is my height and weight sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or tracked.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. A person who is 1.75 m tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. In pounds and inches the formula is weight × 703 ÷ height².
How is the healthy weight range worked out?
It is the weight at your height that gives a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9, which is the "healthy weight" band in the World Health Organization adult categories.
When is BMI not a good measure?
BMI does not tell fat from muscle, so it can read high for athletes and people with a lot of muscle. It is not meant for children and teenagers, pregnant women, or older adults with low muscle mass, and it ignores where body fat sits. Treat it as a rough screening number only.
Does this tell me what to do about my weight?
No. This page gives you a number and the standard category, nothing more. For questions about your health, talk to a doctor or another qualified health professional.
