Steps

  1. Write 1 1/2 as an improper fraction: 3/2.
  2. Find a common denominator: the least common multiple of 2 and 4 is 4.
  3. Rewrite the fractions: 3/2 = 6/4 and 3/4 = 3/4.
  4. Add the numerators: 6 + 3 = 9, so the result is 9/4.
  5. 9/4 is already in lowest terms.
  6. As a mixed number: 2 1/4.

How to calculate with fractions

  1. Choose "Calculate" and type two fractions, mixed numbers, or decimals, for example 1 1/2 and 3/4.
  2. Pick add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
  3. Read the simplified result, its mixed-number, decimal, and percent forms, and the step-by-step working.
  4. To simplify or convert one value, switch to "Simplify and convert" and type a fraction, decimal, or percent.

Results are always reduced to lowest terms. Dividing by a fraction equal to zero shows a message instead of a result, because it has no answer.

Questions

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.

How do I type a mixed number?

Write the whole part, a space, and the fraction: 2 3/8 means two and three eighths. Negative numbers work too, as -2 3/8. You can also type decimals like 0.75 or percents like 75%.

How are fractions added or subtracted?

The calculator finds the least common multiple of the two denominators, rewrites both fractions over it, adds or subtracts the numerators, and then reduces the result. The steps panel shows each of these moves with your numbers.

What does 0.1(6) mean in the decimal result?

Digits in brackets repeat forever, so 0.1(6) is 0.16666… and 1/3 is 0.(3). A fraction ends as a plain decimal only when its denominator, in lowest terms, has no prime factors other than 2 and 5.

Is there a limit on the size of the numbers?

Calculations are exact and use big integers, so long numerators and denominators are fine. Inputs are limited to 60 characters to keep the page responsive.
