How to calculate the fuel cost of a trip
- Choose metric or US units and enter the one-way distance. Tick "Round trip" to count it twice.
- Enter your car's fuel consumption (L/100 km or km per litre) or fuel economy (mpg).
- Enter the fuel price per litre or gallon.
- Enter how many people share the cost to see each person's share.
The price is currency neutral: use whatever currency your fuel price is in. Switching between L/100 km and km per litre converts your number for you.
Questions
Is anything I enter uploaded?
No. The trip cost is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
How is the fuel cost calculated?
In metric, litres = distance × L/100 km ÷ 100 (or distance ÷ km per litre), and cost = litres × price per litre. In US units, gallons = miles ÷ mpg, and cost = gallons × price per gallon.
What is the difference between L/100 km and mpg?
L/100 km is how many litres the car uses per 100 km, so lower is better. Miles per gallon is how far it goes on one US gallon, so higher is better. Choose the unit that matches your car; the tool does the rest.
How do I split the cost between passengers?
Enter how many people are sharing, including the driver. The tool shows what each person pays for fuel. It does not include tolls, parking, or wear on the car.
Why does my real fuel use differ from the estimate?
Motorway speed, traffic, load, weather, and air conditioning all change consumption. For a more accurate result, use your own recent average rather than the manufacturer figure.
