How to convert a number to words
- Type or paste a number. Decimals, negative numbers, and very long numbers all work.
- Pick a language, and choose Words, Cheque (for amounts of money), or Ordinal (first, second, third).
- Copy the result. The same number is also shown in the other languages below it.
Decimals are read digit by digit, so 3.14 is "three point one four". In Cheque style the cents are written as a fraction over 100, which is how banks and legal documents show amounts so that nothing can be added later.
Questions
Is my number uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the numbers you type never leave your device.
How do I write a cheque amount in words?
Choose the Cheque style and a currency. The amount is written in words followed by the cents as a fraction, as in "one hundred twenty-three dollars and 45/100". Amounts with more than two decimals are rounded to the nearest cent.
How large a number can it convert?
English goes up to vigintillion, which is a number with up to 66 digits. German, French, and Spanish work below 10^24 and Lithuanian below 10^21, because the names of the larger numbers differ between regions. Numbers are handled as exact integers, so no digits are lost to rounding.
Which languages are supported, and how correct are they?
English, Lithuanian, German, French, and Spanish. Each follows the standard spelling rules of that language, such as "einundzwanzig" in German, "quatre-vingt-un" in French, "veintiún mil" in Spanish, and the singular, plural, and genitive plural forms after numbers in Lithuanian. German, French, and English also offer ordinals; for Spanish and Lithuanian the ordinal style is not available.
What do the long scale and short scale mean?
English uses the short scale, where a billion is 1,000,000,000. German and French use the long scale for the names above a million: a Milliarde or milliard is 10^9 and a Billion or billion is 10^12. The tool uses the usual scale of each language, so the English and German words for the same large number can look different.
