How to split people into random teams
- Paste your names, one per line. A class list, a sports roster, or colleagues for a workshop all work.
- Choose a number of groups, or the number of people you want in each group. Add "keep apart" rules if some people should not be together.
- Press Make groups. Press Shuffle again for a new split, then copy the result or download it as a text or CSV file.
Use the group name field to call them Team, Group, Table, or Pod, and mark a captain if you want one person named per group.
Questions
Are the names I paste uploaded?
No. The names stay in your browser and are never sent anywhere or saved. Close the page and they are gone.
Is the shuffle really random?
Yes. It uses your browser’s secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with a method that gives every arrangement the same chance, so no seat or position is favored.
What if the names do not divide evenly?
Groups are balanced so they differ by at most one person. Ten people in three groups give sizes 4, 3, and 3, and which groups get the extra person is random too.
How does "keep apart" work?
Write one rule per line using names exactly as they appear in the list, separated by commas or plus signs, for example "Ada, Ben". People in the same rule will never land in the same group. If your rules make that impossible with the chosen number of groups, the tool tells you to use more groups.
Can I get the same groups again?
No, each press of Shuffle again makes new groups. Copy or download the result before shuffling if you want to keep it.
