How to open or create a TAR.GZ file

  1. To look inside, choose "Open TAR / GZ" and pick a .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, or .gz file.
  2. Preview text and images with the eye button, save one file, or press "Download all as ZIP".
  3. To make an archive, choose "Create .tar.gz", add your files, name it, and press Create.

Archives made by tar, GNU tar, and bsdtar on macOS are supported, including long file names. A .gz file that is not a TAR is shown as one file.

Questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is unpacked and created in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.

Which archive types can it open?

Plain .tar, gzip-compressed .tar.gz and .tgz, and single files compressed as .gz. Archives made with bzip2 (.tar.bz2), XZ (.tar.xz), or Zstandard (.tar.zst) are recognised, but cannot be opened yet.

How do I get a ZIP instead?

Open the archive and press "Download all as ZIP". Folders are kept as paths inside the ZIP, and unsafe paths such as ../ are cleaned up.

Does it keep permissions and symlinks?

The list shows folders and links, but ZIP and browser downloads cannot hold Unix permissions or symlinks, so only regular files are saved. For a Linux or macOS install that needs them, extract the archive with the tar command.

How big an archive can I open?

The whole archive is unpacked in memory, so the limit is your device's free memory. A few hundred megabytes works on most computers; multi-gigabyte archives are better handled by the tar command.
