How to compare two JSON documents

  1. Paste the original JSON on the left and the changed JSON on the right.
  2. Read the differences in the changes tree, or switch to the side-by-side view to see them highlighted in place.
  3. Turn on "Ignore array order" if lists may be in a different order, for example sets of tags or ids.
  4. Open the JSON Patch view to copy or download the operations that turn the left document into the right one.

Every change is marked with a symbol as well as a color: + for added, − for removed, and ~ for changed. If either side is not valid JSON, the error message says where parsing stopped.

Questions

Is my JSON uploaded?

No. Both documents are parsed and compared in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for configs and API responses that contain private data.

Does key order matter?

No. JSON objects are unordered, so {"a":1,"b":2} and {"b":2,"a":1} are reported as identical. Array order matters unless you turn on "Ignore array order".

What is a JSON Patch?

A JSON Patch (RFC 6902) is a list of add, remove, and replace operations that turns one document into another. Many APIs and libraries can apply it, which makes it useful for partial updates.

How are the paths written?

Paths use JSON Pointer (RFC 6901). /author/name is the name key inside author, and /tags/1 is the second item of tags. A slash inside a key is written ~1 and a tilde ~0.
