How to count words
- Type in the box or paste your text.
- The counts at the top update as you type.
- Check reading time and whether the text fits common limits such as an X post or an SMS.
Character counts include spaces and line breaks; "Without spaces" leaves them out. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, the way people see them.
Questions
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded or saved, so drafts, essays, and private notes stay on your device.
How are words counted?
Words are found with your browser’s built-in language rules, so hyphenated words, numbers, and languages without spaces (such as Chinese or Japanese) are counted sensibly. Punctuation and emoji are not counted as words.
How is reading time worked out?
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average for adults reading silently. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations.
Why are some words missing from "Most used words"?
Very common words such as "the", "and", and "of" are left out, along with words shorter than three letters and plain numbers, so the list shows the words that carry meaning.
