How to make a 2D barcode
- Pick the type: Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix, PDF417, Aztec, Micro QR, MaxiCode, or one of the others.
- Type or paste the content. The preview updates as you type, and errors say what the symbol cannot hold.
- Choose a size and colors. Keep the code dark on a light background so scanners can read it.
- Download a PNG or an SVG.
Need a one-dimensional code such as Code 128 or EAN-13? Use the Barcode Generator. For links and everyday use, the QR Code Generator has more styling options.
Questions
Is what I type uploaded anywhere?
No. The barcode is drawn in your browser. The content, the image, and the files you download stay on your device.
How do I make a GS1 DataMatrix?
Choose GS1 DataMatrix and write each Application Identifier in brackets, for example (01)09501101530003(17)271231(10)LOT42. The tool inserts the separators and the special start character for you, and reports an error if the data does not follow GS1 rules, such as a wrong check digit.
Which 2D barcode should I pick?
Data Matrix suits small parts and pharma, PDF417 suits long text on documents and tickets, Aztec works without a quiet zone, Micro QR fits very short text in a small space, and MaxiCode is for parcel sorting. For links and general use, a normal QR code is the best choice.
Why does my barcode say the data is too long?
Every symbol has a maximum size. Micro QR holds about 35 digits, MicroPDF417 a few dozen characters, and Data Matrix up to 2,335 characters. Shorten the content or pick a larger symbology.
Which download should I use?
Use SVG for print and design tools, because it stays sharp at any size. Use PNG for documents and websites. Print at the largest size your label allows and leave the quiet border on.
