How to read text aloud

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Pick a language and a voice, then adjust the speed, pitch, and volume.
  3. Press Speak. The word being read is highlighted. Use Pause, Resume, or Stop whenever you like.

Slow the speed down to proofread your own writing by ear, or speed it up to skim a long article. Match the voice language to the language of the text: a voice in the wrong language reads it with the wrong pronunciation. The available voices depend on your device, so the list is different on every phone and computer.

Questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

This site never sends your text anywhere. The voice itself comes from your browser and operating system, and that part depends on the voice. Voices marked “online” (for example some Google voices in Chrome) may send the text to the browser maker's speech service. Voices without that label run on your device. The tool can show only on-device voices.

Why are the voices different on my phone and my computer?

This tool does not include any voices. It asks your browser for the voices installed on your device, so Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS each offer their own list. Installing more voices or languages in your system settings adds them here.

Can I download the speech as an MP3 or WAV file?

No. The browser speech feature plays sound through your speakers but gives websites no access to the audio, so a recording cannot be made honestly in the page without sending your text to an outside service. To record, use a screen or audio recorder on your device while it reads.

Why does the highlighted word sometimes jump a sentence at a time?

Word highlighting needs the voice to report each word as it speaks. Many on-device voices do, but some voices, especially online ones, only report when a sentence starts. The tool then marks the whole sentence.

Is there a length limit?

The tool reads long text one sentence at a time, because browsers can stop in the middle of a very long passage. There is no fixed limit, but a very long text may take a while to read, and you can pause or stop at any time.
