How to take the typing speed test

  1. Choose how long to type (15, 30, 60, or 120 seconds) and what to type: common words, code snippets, or your own text.
  2. Click the text and start typing. The clock begins on your first key. Mistakes turn red and underlined; Backspace fixes them.
  3. When time is up you see WPM, accuracy, and a chart of your speed second by second. Press Esc at any time to restart.

Your best score for each time and text type is kept in this browser, and the last results are shown as small bars so you can see your progress.

Questions

Is my typing sent anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Your best scores and recent results are saved only in this browser’s local storage, and you can clear them by clearing site data.

How is WPM calculated?

A word is counted as five characters, including spaces. Speed (WPM) counts only the characters you typed correctly, divided by five, per minute. Raw speed counts every character you typed, right or wrong.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the share of all your key presses that matched the text at that moment. A mistake you fix with Backspace still counts against accuracy, because you did type it wrong the first time.

Can I practice with my own text?

Yes. Choose "Your own text" and write or paste the passage you want to practice, such as a quote, a speech, or terms from your work. That mode does not count toward your personal bests. Code snippets mode practices punctuation and brackets.

What is a good typing speed?

Most people type 35 to 45 WPM. Reaching 60 to 70 WPM at 95% accuracy is solid for office work, and professional typists often exceed 80. Accuracy first, speed second: slow down until mistakes drop, then speed up.
