How to compress a video
- Drop a video onto the box or choose one from your device.
- Choose a quality preset, or switch to a target size and type the megabytes you need.
- Optionally cap the resolution and pick MP4 or WebM.
- Press Compress video, compare the before and after sizes, and download the result.
Lowering the resolution to 720p or 480p is the quickest way to shrink a large phone video without much visible loss on a small screen. The sound is re-encoded at a lower bitrate too.
Questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is re-encoded inside this browser tab using your device. It never leaves your computer or phone.
How do I compress a video to a specific size, like 10 MB?
Choose "Target file size" and type the number of megabytes. The tool works out the bitrate from the video length and aims for that size. Very long videos at a tiny target will look rough, so lower the resolution as well.
MP4 or WebM?
MP4 (H.264) plays almost everywhere, including phones, chat apps, and editors. WebM (VP9) is usually smaller at the same quality and plays in browsers, but some apps cannot open it.
Why is the result bigger than my original?
Files that were already compressed hard can grow when re-encoded at a higher quality. Pick the Small file preset, lower the resolution, or set a smaller target size.
How long does it take?
It depends on your device. Browsers with hardware video encoding can compress faster than real time; others take about as long as the video lasts. A progress bar and a Cancel button are shown while it works.
