How to turn a video into a GIF

  1. Drop a video onto the box or choose one from your device.
  2. Drag the two handles, or type times, to pick the few seconds you want. Play the selection to check it.
  3. Choose the speed (frames per second), width, and whether it loops.
  4. Press Make GIF, look at the preview, and download it.

The size estimate under the options is a rough guide. Short loops of 2 to 6 seconds work best: they stay small enough to post in chat and email.

Questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The frames are read and the GIF is built inside this browser tab. Your video never leaves your device.

How do I make the GIF file smaller?

Pick a shorter part of the video, a smaller width, or fewer frames per second. Width has the biggest effect: halving it cuts the file to about a quarter. 10 frames per second at 480 pixels wide is a good start for sharing.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

A GIF can show only 256 colors per frame, so photos and gradients lose detail. This tool picks the best 256 colors for every frame separately, which looks better than a single shared palette, but video will never look as clean as the original.

Which videos can I turn into a GIF?

MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV files that your browser can decode. A single GIF can have up to 600 frames, for example 30 seconds at 20 frames per second.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. The GIF format cannot carry sound. Use the Video Trimmer if you want a short clip with audio.
