How to use the tone generator
- Choose a sound: a wave shape or a kind of noise.
- Set the frequency with the slider or type an exact value. For a glide between two frequencies, turn on Sweep.
- Keep the volume low, press Play, and raise your device volume slowly.
- To keep the sound, set a length and press Download WAV.
The note name next to the frequency is the nearest note in standard tuning (A4 = 440 Hz). Typical uses are testing speakers, finding resonances in a room, checking hearing range, and tuning by ear.
Questions
Is it safe for my ears and speakers?
The volume starts low on purpose. Raise your device volume slowly, avoid very high frequencies at high volume, and do not use loud low tones on small speakers or headphones, which can be damaged.
What frequencies can it make?
From 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, which covers the range of human hearing. What you actually hear depends on your speakers or headphones. Phone speakers cannot play deep bass.
What is the difference between the waveforms?
A sine wave is a single pure tone. Square, sawtooth, and triangle waves add harmonics, so they sound buzzier and brighter. Square is hollow and reedy, sawtooth is bright, triangle is soft.
What are white, pink, and brown noise?
White noise has equal energy at all frequencies, like a hiss. Pink noise has more bass and sounds like steady rain. Brown noise has even more bass and sounds like a deep rumble. People use them to mask noise or to help focus and sleep.
Can I download the sound?
Yes. Set a length from 1 second to 10 minutes and press Download WAV. The file is made on your device at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit mono, with the current volume and settings.
