How to see the details of a video or audio file
- Drop a video or audio file on the box.
- Read the File section for the container, size, duration, and bitrate.
- Read one section per track for the codec, resolution, frame rate, color information, channels, and language.
- Copy any value with its button, or press Copy as JSON for everything.
Bitrates come from the file's own headers when they are stored there, and otherwise from the size of the packets in the file. Tags that are not text, such as cover art, are counted but not shown.
Questions
Is my file uploaded?
No. Only the headers of the file are read, inside this browser tab. The file is not decoded and nothing is sent to a server.
What can I find out about a file?
The container format, duration, overall bitrate, and every track: codec, resolution, frame rate, rotation, color space, audio channels and sample rate, language, and embedded tags such as title, artist, and date.
Why does the frame rate show a decimal like 29.97?
Many cameras and broadcast formats use 30000/1001 frames per second, which is 29.97. The same goes for 23.976 and 59.94. The number is the average over the whole file.
What does Playable in this browser mean?
It says whether this browser can decode that track. A file can be valid but use a codec, such as HEVC or AC-3, that some browsers cannot play. The other video tools need a playable track.
Which files can I check?
MP4, M4A, MOV, WebM, MKV, MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, and AAC files. Copy the result as JSON to paste into a bug report or a script.
